What can an Optometrist do for me?
As an Optometrist, Dr. Mayo can examine, diagnose and manage eye diseases and disorders of the visual system. Treatment may include corrective lenses, vision therapy, medication, education or referral to another specialist.
A Doctor of Optometry is the best choice to conduct a thorough eye examination which includes a glasses prescription but also a complete evaluation of the external and internal structures of the eye, including eye pressure testing for glaucoma and a screening that may detect many systemic diseases (ie. diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol). With our new OPTOMAP imaging we can screen the inside of your eyes in seconds. It allows Dr. Mayo see a much larger field of view than with normal undilated testing and can find many retinal conditions without blurring your vision.
An Optometrist can evaluate your visual function to determine how your eyes are positioned and working when you are engaging in near or distant tasks. They can then diagnose conditions that lead to visual stress, fatigue and headaches and formulate a plan to alleviate them. They can evaluate your eyes for competency with Blue-wavelength light screens and give you advice or prescriptions to help reduce your strain, blur or discomfort with computer/screen use.
Optometrists can assess the visual development of the eyes in a child with a dilated eye examination. This allows objective testing for refractive error (the need for a glasses prescription) which if left undetected could lead to permanent vision loss (Amblyopia). This cannot be determined in a Public Health vision screening. All children should have a complete (dilated) eye examination before they start school.
